Dreams of abandonment
Nightmares of a reality known
As a boy I heard I was abandoned
By a father who didn’t care
A life of wondering as boy to man
Who was this man that couldn’t care,
A question I could not answer
Until he passed away
One year ago tonight
Under the fullest harvest moon
His death foretold exactly
One year and one day earlier in a dream
Where my Grandpa, his father, and I
Watched him ride off into the cosmos
These dreams of abandonment
Have haunted me for life
For these haunts become reality
As I’ve walked away from it all
Picking up his room,
I found myself
The parts of him
That are me
Were in what he kept
I miss the man, my father
Donald Lee Seeger
Late in life he was there for me
When we both had abandoned it all
I would lament the work, and he would answer
With the weight of his few precise words
That’s what it takes.
We had what we needed.
Tonight I let these dreams of abandonment
Ride off into the cosmos with him.
